I went to the ER Saturday morning in extreme pain and with heavy nausea, they did a CT scan and said it was a 5mm stone that had just came out of the kidney. they sent me home with a prescription for flomax, oxy (5mg), and Zofran. However, the pain meds just aren't helping, I'm still in severe pain and it ramped up last night/this morning. I had another stone in December 2022 (4mm) and it took a week to pass but I remember the pain meds did help back then. This time my pain is all around my back and almost like severe menstrual cramps as well? Should I go back to the ER? i am getting nervous that this stone is stuck I never had trouble peeing with the other stone like this. Any advice is helpful

Marvin1989May 4, 2026Not that it will help much but I get a tiny bit of relief from a large heating pad wrapped from back to front. I know you are in excruciating pain this is not helpful. Hope you feel better soon.
Stone Fighter #761060May 4, 2026A heating pad and a large dose of ibuprofen to cut down inflammation is what really helped me. They gave me hydrocodone with acetaminophen but that didn't cut all the pain the way ibuprofen (600mg) + a heating pad did. Edit: typo
Stone Fighter #14E681May 4, 2026My last stone was the same. No relief. The ER will pump you with morphine which will give you some relief but then send you home with other drugs to try (which also likely won't help). They are there to save lives, not perform lithotripsy. You either tough it out or go to an actual urologist. They would be willing to blast the stone if you can't take it anymore. They understand kidney stone pain and will do whatever you want (try different meds or just blast the stone).
