Week 5 of a kidney stone - wait a bit longer or get stent/laser?

Husband is on week 5 of a kidney stone (left-side)

CT scan in week 1 showed a 4mm stone in ureter (he was in the emergency room for 1 night)

CT scan in week 4 said stone is 6mm now but has migrated distally, approx 40mm proximal to the VUJ. Associated with mild hydronephrosis.

No infection but he has been unable to go to work for 5 weeks and is in pain and feels nauseous. Various prescription pain meds but nothing seems to help much.

We've read online that everyone that has had stent+ laser has said it was a horrible experience. So he's hoping it'll come out soon so he can avoid that + hospital.

1) Would you wait for it to come out seeing as it's so close to entering the bladder? (scared of the surgery and pain it will cause)

2) Has anyone experienced anything similar? (same size stone for the same amount of time? How long did yours take to come out?)

We're in Australia (Perth) so we have the option to go to emergency (public) and wait many hours and get it for free. Currently has a referral for a private urologist and waiting for them to get back to us - worried it might be a long wait and they'll just end up offering stent+ laser anyways.

Feels like this has been going on for so long it's hard to think straight.

Oh and this is his 3rd stone , he's had one roughly every 10 years (he's 39) but even though the others were worse pain-wise, they only lasted a few weeks. He had them tested once and was told he had a combination of all the different types of stones so "there's nothing he can do to prevent it". I doubt there's nothing so I've bought a strainer and determined for him to catch this one and get it tested again (& 24 hour urine test) - I've said I'm more than happy to reach into the toilet to retrieve it if it falls in lol.
