Why does it still hurt?

I know I'm posting a lot. I thirst for knowledge.

More importantly.

My temporary stent was removed today, 5 hours ago and I have had significant flank pain the whole time. Even through a Dilaudid and a heating pad it isn't letting up.

I know it's normal to have discomfort not unlike kidney stone pain for 24-48 hours due the the removal aggravating those areas (according to my research) but this seems excessive? So I wanted to check in with the VURD 😅😬

I've only had one other stent before these (being this temp one and the indwelling one) but it had to be taken out 3 days later due to a rejection like reaction.

Post-stent removal pain is one of the most under-warned things in urology and you're right to question it. Here's what's happening: when a stent is pulled out, the ureter - which is a muscular tube - goes into reactive spasm. That spasm can be quite severe and can persist for hours, sometimes even up to 24-48 hours. Thank you. This is what I needed to hear. This eased my mind a bit. The pain has been consistent the entire time, not escalating/increasing. (Still really hurts though). I will continue my symbiotic relationship with my heating pad, continue drinking water water, and throw in some Tylenol between diluadid doses. Also maybe cry a little. I just passed two stones both same side but on opposite ends of the journey by time I got in to see my urologist. Passed one and got lithotripsy yesterday on the other. I was pretty sure I was going to end up with one but I didn't thank God. Stent removal is nightmare fuel.
