Pain primary in the hip?

I think I might have a stone, for the last 1-2 weeks I keep getting brief episodes of intense, sharp pain but it's more or less in my hip - as in right on the lateral side of my hip joint and back, not really on the front or radiating anywhere else. The episodes last a few seconds and occur 3-6 times per day, and don't seem to be related to moving my hip and there's no pain when I press on the area, but it is definitely much more common when lying flat in bed at the end of the day.
No blood or other urinary symptoms and I otherwise feel well. It could just be joint pain but it feels so different to any joint pain I've felt before, it has that sudden intense sharp pinpoint pain that is classic of a stone (even though I have not had one before).
Anyone else had a kidney stone where the pain is primarily hip based?

Stone Fighter #0430C8May 2, 2026Please call your doctor for a CT scan. I had horrific pain in my hip, but I also had pain in my back-kidney area, groin, and shooting into my crotch and down my leg. It started with my hip, though, so it’s worth investigating.
Stone Fighter6 #8265BBMay 2, 2026That back to loin to groin type pain is super classic, if I had that I would be very sure, but I don't :( but interesting that yours started with the hip! I do have a kind of subtle vague ache in my back-kidney area so it might be adding up.. Thanks!
