What foods actually don’t cause kidney stones?!?!

I’ve had kidney stones since I was 19. I’ve cut out a lot of foods like chocolate, berries, spinach, sweet potatoes, beans, nuts, sodas, tea, and more.

I went to my urologist and he said no stones (yay), but there’s calcification in my kidneys that could turn into stones.

Idk what else I can do to get a clear picture. I read online that I should cut back on meat protein, which is fine, but all the alternatives like beans, nuts, and potatoes are high in oxalates. It’s frustrating because I feel like I’m always reworking my diet when it’s already this restricted.

Side note: my doctor said I can only pass a 2mm stone without a procedure. Since healthcare is expensive in the US, I try to avoid needing one.

The general rule is that 5mm is passable without intervention. It'll probably still hurt, though. For food, it sounds like you're on the right track. Certain teas are okay, and berries, sodas, and some nuts should be fine too.

The type of stones you get has a lot to do with which diet changes to make. The biggest thing for me is more water. I always drank at least 2 liters a day, but I've been told (by a nephrologist) to bump that up to 3. Next time you get a stone, see if you can get its composition analyzed—it'll help you get some answers.

How much urine you put out is one of the most important factors—try to get 3L of urine a day (so drink even more if you exercise or sweat from the heat). Cutting salt also helps a lot (prepared meals/pizzas from restaurants and supermarkets almost always have too much, and bread generally has a surprisingly high amount too) Pure lemon juice can apparently also help with quite a few types of stones.
