Is there anything besides surgery for this?

Strategy: Patient journey

Just came back from my urologist appointment. I’ve got a 2 centimeter stone and the doctor is recommending surgery. I’ve been through this before and it’s definitely not fun, so I wanted to ask here — is there anything else that can be done? Something that doesn’t involve going under the knife.

Agreed. If you want a second medical opinion, Reddit isn’t really the place for that. Talk to another doctor if you’re not comfortable with what your first one said.

It’s right at the borderline size. Your options would be ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, or since you’ve hit the 2cm mark, PCNL. Both are considered minimally invasive procedures. Surgery is really the only option here — trust your doctor on this one.

Like everyone else is pointing out, with a 2cm stone surgery is basically your only realistic option. It’s not going to just break apart and come out on its own.

The stent is rough, but trust me losing a kidney and needing dialysis would be way worse 😭 I only had my stent in for a few days and it honestly wasn’t that terrible. I had a 6-7mm stone taken out with lithotripsy and the whole thing was way more manageable than dealing with the stone itself. The relief of having it gone was just incredible.
