Anyone else genetically cursed with kidney stones?

Growing up I watched my father struggle with stone after stone after stone. Several hospital trips and surgeries. I’ve seen this man have both kidneys full of stones on more than one occasion. His father was also plagued with kidney stones. My mother’s father? You guessed it, kidney stones! My father and I have both had them examined, tried prescribed medication, completely changed diets, lifestyles, exercise, etc. Still get them. At a certain point I just gave up and accepted my fate with these shitty little stones. A lot of the time they’re relatively smaller and I can pass mine with no intervention and mild pain. Once a year or so it feels like I have one that’s so bad that I get dehydrated from vomiting and end up feeling half dead in the ER. I feel like I was cursed with my genetics. Lol Just curious if anyone else has a similar story.

Also side rant - I hate when this happens and I have to miss work a day or so (literally last Thursday and Friday, return back tomorrow). Because when I get back I get treated to all of my coworker doctors (I work in IT). But they all have an opinion and I get treated to their lecture about changing my diet and doing this exercise and blah blah blah. I’ve had stones for nearly 20 years. You don’t think I’ve tried nearly everything? lol

Yes. My stones are entirely due to genetics, cystinuria is a condition that I wouldn’t wish on my worse enemy. Recurrent and large stones are inevitable. ATM I have a stent inserted following complete obstruction of my right ureter due to two stones whikst travelling overseas and the CT also showed a staghorn stone on the left side in the lower pole and the upper pole has several large stones.. these will need to be dealt with in due course. What are your stones made of? What advice have y...

Oh that sucks! Sorry to hear about the stent. I’ve only had one but it was more uncomfortable than the stones somehow! I’m dealing with a 6mm right now and hoping to pass it naturally. Surprisingly I had never heard of cystinuria before you mentioned it. That could explain what I’ve called my cursed genetics.

I'm nearly 50. I have gotten them off and on since 18. Diet, exercise, and hydration are the key to preventing them. I have also found when I'm extremely stressed out, they tend to form then as well. Probably due to eating or hydration habits changing during times of stress.
