Trying to Collect All the Fragments
- Strategy
- Patient journey
Went in for lithotripsy today to break up a 14 mm stone. Before sending me home, they handed me a little strainer and a urine bottle and said I have to catch every fragment that comes out.
So far I can’t spot a single thing. When I rub the bottom of the strainer, it just feels gritty, like grains of salt or sand, even finer than salt. I tried tipping whatever I caught onto a piece of toilet paper, but it seems to soak straight through.
Do I really need to keep those tiny little grains, or should I just wait for the bigger chunks to pass and scoop those into the jar?

Hey, I’ve got mine coming up on the 12th! How did yours go, were you put all the way to sleep for it? Was it the laser?
It went smoothly. They had me in and out of the OR in 40 minutes. Yep, I was under general and they used the laser. Not feeling too bad at the moment, though I’m still pretty loopy on the good stuff. 🤪
That’s awesome, are you discharged already? Stent still in? And are you M or F?
