Ever since my kidney stone I'm finally paying attention to labels and all that stuff they've been telling me for years - stuff like "avoid processed foods" - turns out it's true... I know - I'm an idiot...

Today's shocking revelation: picked up two sourdough loaves at Safeway today. Both look like bread. Both taste like bread.

Bakery sourdough: 80 mg sodium per serving. San Luis Sourdough: 230 mg per serving — and that's a smaller slice.

Yeah, I noticed mostly everything has a shitload of sodium lol. I have a double whammy because my blood pressure was pretty high too. I think I was eating far too much salt in general. I try and track everything I eat now and google sodium content. For breakfast I stick with fruit and yogurt. Lunches are usually the same thing everyday (chicken sandwich) and I’ll try and incorporate as much veggies (not including beets or spinach of course) as I can throughout the day. Mrs. Dash is a great call. The googling everything part is what got exhausting for me. I actually started building a little app to make it faster. It tracks my sodium budget for the day and helps me figure out what to order before I eat. Still early but it’s saved me a ton of time. Whole Foods and TJ’s are solid too - once you start reading labels you can’t stop.

It’s definitely eye-opening how much sodium is in processed food once you start looking. The bread comparison blew my mind because it’s not even a “junk food” - it’s just bread, and the difference is 3x depending on which one you grab.

ChatGPT has been a huge help. I tell it what I’m thinking about eating and I’ve already programmed it to know about my stone history and BP so it will give me suggestions for alternatives, menu options, etc

That's exactly how I started! I was doing the same thing with Claude. But I kept losing context between conversations - it didn't remember my totals from earlier in the day, didn't know what I'd already eaten. That's what pushed me to turn it into an actual app. It keeps a running sodium budget so when I ask "what should I order" it already knows where I'm at. Happy to let you try it if you want - DM me.
