Do symptoms really come and go?

I found out I had two kidney stones on Feb. 1. The timeline for the first one (2-3mm) seemed pretty routine: blood in my urine right away, a few days of nausea, remarkably intense pressure to urinate about a week in, and once that settled down, an afternoon of level 10+ pain in my back and groin. I passed it that night. About 11-12 days total.
As far as I know, the second one hasn't come out yet. Last night I had some discomfort in my groin, only on the left side. Manageable, just annoying. Today that's gone, but I've had a frequent urge/pressure to urinate in my groin that's been coming and going all day. My back has maybe been a little tight at times, but nothing I'd notice otherwise.
Has anyone else had symptoms like this that come and go? The first time around it was all back-to-back and hit at once. This time it's been sporadic, which has me wondering if I'm about to go through the whole thing again, or if something else is going on.
