It gets better with time, usually around the 48-72 hour mark. I know it sounds backwards, but really push the fluids—it helps as the system gets flushed through. I get through the first few days by alternating ibuprofen with codeine-based meds, and sometimes Flomax. Microwaveable heat packs can help too. Anticholinergics like oxybutynin sometimes help, but they tend to tighten up the sphincters, and in your case that'd make peeing harder—so probably not the one to go for here.

Take a hot bath if you can—it helps with the cramping, the pain, and the burning at the exit (the urethra). Peeing in the bath usually eases that burning feeling. It should clear up after 2-3 days. Ball up your fist and press as hard as you can into the side where the stent is, to fight the extra pressure from the backwash the stent causes. Do this on top of whatever pain meds you're taking. And do it every time you pee, for as long as you've got the stent.

Yeah, it's gonna suck for a little while. Plenty of water, fellow human. Grab some Flomax (or whatever the equivalent is where you live), and get some Ural to make your urine more alkaline—it helps a lot. It'll hurt, but the sooner you can pass proper amounts of urine, the sooner it'll hurt less. Push through it, you'll be fine before you know it.
