Strategy: Patient journey

So I had a kidney stone in Feb and a scan mid March didn’t find it.

The pain never really went away. I have had constant low level pain since then. The urologist only offers a ‘virtual clinic’. Diagnosis and communication via text and letters.

A&E are dismissive because the scan in March was clear but the pain last night kept me awake all night and got so bad that I was vomiting.

I physically cannot lay on my front without pain in my flank. What should I do to get taken seriously. I’m reliant on the NHS so finding another doctor isn’t straightforward

I’m presuming that the scan that you had was a CT scan?

Persistent flank pain after a stone episode — even when the scan looks clear — is more common than people realise. A few things worth considering: First, a standard CT in March can miss a small residual fragment or a stone that has moved to a different position. A low-dose non-contrast CT urogram is more sensitive than ultrasound for detecting retained stones or subtle ureteric obstruction. Ok., so the vast majority of stones are picked up with a CT- KUB which you would have had. They aren’t 100% but their pickup rate is very high. What did urinalysis and blood tests show when you went to A&E? I had a quick look back in your previous posts, the stone was tiny and sensibly the urologist d it ent intervene so you may well have passed it. There are no meds btw that break up stones or dissolve them. Of course this may be du to other things in part dependent on age and gender. I ...

Sounds like maybe uric acid stones? This is my third time in 1 year getting them. I am being referred to a Nephrologist, but I had to press my Urologist and advocate for myself. I would go definitely go back to the E.R, tell them Everything you are Experiencing, they can give you iv. pain meds and flomax and do further urine and blood tests.
