First ESWL this week… Advice?
- Strategy
- Patient journey
Going in this week for ESWL for a 6mm bastard in my right kidney… What does the recovery look like from it? Can anyone provide me any insight/tips for the following days? First stone, first time going under general anesthesia so I’m stressing out over it a bit.

ESWL is non invasive. Your back may get sore use heating pad it helps , drink lots of water ipee when the bladder is full. It helps cleaning the system so the blood in the pee will stop in 2 days, also it helps with the kidney pain if you get kidney , just stay on the couch for 2-3 days, you will be fine, get the stainer from Amazon in case you need to capture the stone for analysis .
I’m a big fan of getting the strainers! They are fairly inexpensive and seeing a fragment lets you see actual progress!
Biggest issue with small stones is fragments bouncing outside the imaging field before they are completely broken up. The treatment is like getting a kidney punch with a sore back and blood in the urine for a few days. It’s way better than the incisions that were made to get stones out before ESWL was invented.
