I came across this article this morning and even though it’s about that racecar driver who had a different type of sepsis, there’s still plenty of useful info in it about kidney stones. Back when I was dealing with repeat kidney stones, my doctor told me that if ever I was running a fever. I should just pack my bag, because if I called him he was sending me straight to the emergency room.

It’s a really good article since it walks you through what’s happening and how the treatment will play out.

Here are a few of the main points from it that might help you figure out when to seek emergency care.

**T**: Temperature – running higher or lower than usual. **I**: Infection – any hint of one. **M**: Mental decline – confusion, drowsiness, hard to rouse. **E**: Extremely ill – bad pain, trouble breathing or that gut feeling something is very wrong. If you or someone you love has an infection and starts getting confused, a racing heart, shortness of breath or just feels suddenly way worse — do not wait. Get to an emergency room now.

Recently got to enjoy all the fun and excitement of a septic kidney stone. D- experience, would not recommend. I am ridiculously lucky that this hit right after I'd had another (unrelated) surgery. I literally dragged myself to the doctor when the fever spiked. Any other time, I absolutely would have written it off as some normal bug from one of my kids and sat on that fever until I was in really bad shape.

I've had sepsis twice from kidney infections. For me the biggest sign was this absolute certainty that something was wrong, and on top of that I still felt really confused. DO NOT WASTE TIME if you ever feel this way. And pls make sure you tell someone at the ER how you're feeling so they get a doctor to see you ASAP. Every single minute bumps up your risk of dying. Seriously.

I hate going to the ER. So much that it turns into a whole big todo with my wife, who is almost always right with her YOU NEED TO GO TO THE ER NOW! statement. That said, the second flank pain starts I'm on alert. Once it starts getting bad I'm out the door. I normally have a high pain tolerance but that non-stop kidney pain gets me nauseous and usually vomiting. On top of that, since I've gone septic (4x) with pretty much every stone(s), any one of the sepsis signs is enough to get me there...
