Need some advice! Now it feels like I’m peeing broken glass? Should I get my surgery moved up sooner? How rough is the stent gonna be? 😫

For context I’m a 26F. This is my first time dealing with a stone. It kicked off a little over two weeks ago. The ER found a 5x3mm stone sitting 10-20mm from my UVJ. For the past two weeks I’ve had basically no pain. I booked surgery for June 10th to take the stone out if it hadn’t passed by then, figuring it was fine since I had so little pain and that would buy me two more weeks to try to pass it on my own.

Well all of that flipped today when I woke up in the most god awful pain. All of it in my pelvic/groin area. The most intense, painful pressure I’ve ever felt in my entire life. Felt like I had to pee every 5 minutes. I started crying right in the ER waiting room, I was just miserable.

The stone is now sitting at the UVJ. They gave me pain and nausea meds and told me to see urology about moving my surgery up. Now the pain meds have knocked out pretty much all the pain except this insane peeing glass feeling. It’s to the point where I don’t even want to pee because it hurts so dang bad. So here’s my question, is this something yall feel right before you pass a stone? Should I just bump my surgery up to next week and get it over with? I’m terrified of getting a stent but at the same time I just want to feel normal again 😭

I have a feeling you might be close! This is going to be really hard to do, but give the jump and bump method a shot and maybe you can get it out. Look it up on YouTube. I'm in the same boat and going in for surgery on Friday. This'll be my second time around. The stent from my first round was more intense and painful than anything I've ever gone through, including the huge kidney stone I carried for 3 months and labor x 2 with one failed induction. Then again, some folks only get mild discom...

The first time it happens, the biggest shock is that pain this extreme isn't considered medically concerning. I doubt you'd have much luck getting your date bumped up, since a 5mm non-obstructing stone with none of the symptoms that point to a dangerous complication is going to be treated as low priority. Stents can be rough, but they serve an important purpose, and the alternative, a nephrostomy tube, is way more inconvenient imo. With any luck, it'll take care of itself before your surge...

I'm a urologist and I'd like to offer my perspective. A 5x3mm stone at the UVJ sits in a spot that can cause significant pain and urinary symptoms like the ones you're having. The burning when you pee is because the stone is irritating the bladder neck and urethra. Given the severe pain and frequent urination you're dealing with, I'd recommend talking to your urologist about moving your surgery up instead of waiting. Stones at the UVJ that are causing obstructive symptoms shouldn't be left un...
