Hi! I recently went for an ultrasound scan and found out that I have a kidney stone. I’ve had no symptoms whatsoever and never had them (to my knowledge) before. My GP said that it is a small one and has asked for me to be referred to Urology to see if they need to do anything to intervene, but this can take up to 8 weeks to get a response. I’m getting married soon and I guess I’m just worried about it affecting the wedding day as knowing my luck it will happen at the most inconvenient moment possible. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to what to expect? Is there anything I can do? I’m caffeine free, and I have been drinking 2L water a day for the last few years as part of a health journey so hydration isn’t an issue, and I’ve been reducing salt intake as well and lowered intake of animal protein too. I’m very worried as I’ve heard it is painful!
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated as I am a bit of a worrier when it comes to health issues.

A lot of people are walking round with totally symptomless stones, just because it is there doesn’t mean that intervention is necessary, much like gallstones. It is you say small, to add that, ultrasounds typically significantly overestimate the size of stones, often by a factor of 2. Stone Fighter #E224F2Apr 24, 2026Thank you so much, my GP didn’t really give me much more to go off other than it was small so this is incredibly helpful and reassuring as I have no experience or knowledge regarding timeframes or if these things are sometimes symptomless as you mentioned. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond as it’s given me a lot more clarity and peace of mind.
Stone Fighter #56ED91Apr 24, 2026Happy to help out. I’m guessing that you are in the UK. Can you access the ultrasound report online? I used to work in the NHS but escaped overseas years ago and hopefully you can get hold of the report nowadays- it might give the reported dimensions which although not hugely accurate could give us more to go on. If you can get to 3 litres a day, which isn’t a huge leap for you, if there is a small stone you may be able to pass it
