Understanding the Double-J (DJ) Stent

A Double-J stent, also known as a ureteral stent or JJ stent, is a thin, hollow tube placed in the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) after kidney stone surgery. The stent gets its name from the J-shaped curl at each end - one curl sits in the kidney and the other in the bladder. Stent Removal: What to Expect

Cystoscopic Stent Removal (Most Common):

Duration: 1-3 minutes
Anesthesia: Local anesthetic gel in the urethra; optional mild sedation
Procedure: Small rigid cystoscope inserted through urethra into bladder
Grasping: Stent lower curl grasped with small forceps
Removal: Stent gently pulled out through the urethra

String-Assisted Removal (If String Left Attached)
